About Us

Where we are

Our Scout Troop currently meets at the Meritage Centre, opposite our Scout Hut, while we work to renovate our Scout Hut.

Joining Us

We welcome new members from ages 6-14, into all three sections. Many join us through a friend's recommendation, other's come on their own. Regardless, we're always happy to see new faces!

Please complete our Waiting List Form, so that we can collect your details, and let you know as soon as there's a space available. (Depending on which section you're joining, we may already have availability.)

Aged 14-17? Join Merlin ESU.

Become a Leader!

We're always looking for amazing people, from age 14 up, to join us as Leaders in all three sections. We do so much more than just run weekly sessions. You could help by joining our Executive Committee, fundraising for our Scout Hut, or signing up as an occasional or regular helper. Don't worry, we won't expect you to be a Bear Grylls (you don't even need to know how to pitch a tent!)

Please register your interest by completing the Volunteer Enquiry Form

Friday Nights

Our Friday nights run as follows:

  • Beavers 17:15-18:15

  • Cubs 18:30-19:45

  • Scouts 20:00-21:30

We always try to start promptly, and so recommend that you arrive at least 5 minutes before.

Online Scout Manager (OSM)

Like 95% of UK Scout Troops, we use Online Scout Manager to store personal details, keep badge records, and contact parents through. We recommend logging in frequently, to keep up to date with everything going on.

Every parent should have a login- if you can't find your's, please try resetting your password, and then if you still can't login, contact our GSL.

You can find out more about how OSM handle your data here.

Subs

We review our prices every year, so please be aware that these are subject to change. As of 2020, our fees are split into two sections:

January - February: Capitation Fee (£25/month) We charge £50 over the first two months to cover the costs we pay to the District, County, Scout HQ and Insurance, that are due by March.

March - December: Ongoing Costs (£10/month Beavers, £15/month Cubs and Scouts) This money goes towards running the actual troop, such as paying for our utilities, and equipment.

Alternatively, you can make an annual payment in January (£150 for Beavers, £200 for Cubs and Scouts.)

If this will pose a financial challenge to you, please speak to us, to see if we can make any arrangements.

Events outside of our weekly programme may have an additional fee, which we charge to cover the event's costs. If this is the case, we will always inform you in advance.

Sync our Calendar

If you use Google Calendar, you can get our events to appear in your own calendar, where they will automatically update when an event is added, amended, or cancelled. Just select the sections you want to hear about. ('Programme' is our weekly Friday activities, whereas 'Events' shows one-off events.) To make events visible on your phone you may need to go into the settings to make sure that 'Sync' is enabled.

Blog

Social Media

We frequently post on our social media, so make sure to follow to stay up to date! We also have a closed Facebook Group for current members and their parents.

The Scouting Community

8th Hendon is part of a much bigger network of Scouts across the UK. We often join with our District to run camps, and most of our Leader training is provided by the County.

Safeguarding

As Scouts, we aim to provide an environment where everyone can feel welcome and safe, and we therefore take the welfare of all young people very seriously. All our Leaders undergo regular safeguarding training, and those over 18 are DBS checked.

Young people with a concern about scouts, school or home are encouraged to speak to whichever leader they feel most comfortable with. Adults with a concern about a young person, or leader, should contact our Group Scout Leader as soon as possible, in person, or by email. If our GSL is unavailable, or the concern involves them, you should contact the National Scout Safeguarding Team.
